Under ideal conditions the life cycle can be as little as four weeks and adult fleas can live for up to two years.
After a blood feed one female can lay eggs in batches producing a total of up to a 1000 in its lifetime.
Fleas will remain dormant in the pupa stage in unoccupied premises and will only emerge as starving adults by the vibrations of passing hosts. This accounts for the occasional mass attacks which takes place when entering a vacant property or returning from a holiday.
